Manual's Program

The 4 Pillars were developed as a “cultural mantra” for the Manual Girls Lacrosse (MGL) program by coaches Charles Leachman and Stephen Leon. The 4 Pillars represent our foundation of expectation and development for each player and provide a pathway for using lacrosse to teach valuable life lessons.

The 4 Pillars are as follows:

Pillar #1: Effort

Effort is defined as “the total work done to achieve a particular end”. As a lacrosse player at Manual, each player is provided ample opportunity to develop their skills. What you put into the sport will show in your on-field results. Whether it is preparation during open field, winter league games, after school training, or the team needing a goal late in the 4th quarter; the effort you put into your work on and off the field reflects on you as a player and a person. There is no substitute for EFFORT! The level of effort you give is critical to the overall success of the program and defines you as a player and person.

Pillar #2: Attitude

Attitude is defined as “a bodily state of readiness to respond in a characteristic way to a stimulus”. Attitude channels effort to achieve maximum results. Attitude is often what separates the adequate from the outstanding. Developing and maintaining a positive attitude and having the ability to take hardships and success in a measured stride is a recipe for success on the field and in life.

Pillar #3: Communication (both on and off the field)

Communication is defined as “the exchanging of information”. Our program requires an enormous amount of information to be conveyed both on and off the lacrosse field. Effective communication with coaches and teammates is expected from all players and it is a player, not a parent, responsibility.

Pillar #4: Being a Great Teammate

Pillar #4 – Being a Great Teammate – This is a critical pillar and defines MGL as much, if not more, than any other pillar. Being a great teammate is defined as “embodying the understanding and actions attributed to belonging to a team and caring for the overall well-being of your teammates as much or more than your own no matter the situation of circumstances”. We all have bad days from time to time. To have a teammate recognize when you are down and being there to support you makes all the difference in the world!  Be the difference in someone’s life, be a great teammate!
